If you’re a winter sports enthusiast and have just acquired a snowmobile, you should register it before you embark on any of Ontario’s over 300 kilometres of snowmobiling trails. How much does it cost to register a snowmobile in Ontario?

Canada Powersports Financing has provided snowmobile financing in Ontario for over a decade, so the experts here understand the process. In this post, we cover the cost of snowmobile registration and how to navigate the snowmobile registration process if you’re in Ontario.

Do You Need a License to Ride a Snowmobile in Ontario?

Before you even think about snowmobile registration charges, you will need a valid license to ride your snowmobile in Ontario. Get the appropriate license based on your age as follows:

  • Drivers under 12 shouldn’t worry about snowmobile licensing fees. They don’t need a license to ride one!
  • If you’re 12 to 15 years old, you need a valid Motorized Snow Vehicle Operator’s License or the equivalent international documentation to ride a snowmobile.
  • If you’re 16 years old or above, you should have a valid MSVOL, a valid Ontario driver’s license, or the equivalent documentation from another jurisdiction to ride a snowmobile.

The Process of Registering Your Snowmobile in Ontario

How much does it cost to register a snowmobile? It may not matter if you haven’t registered it with the Ministry of Transportation via the ServiceOntario Center. Do this for a new or used snowmobile that has never been registered or one with registration from another jurisdiction.

If you purchase a new snowmobile, your dealer needs to register it within six days of sale with the Ministry of Transportation. What if you acquire a used snowmobile with a valid registration, though? In that case, all you need is to transfer the registration to your name (you must have the signed snow vehicle permit and the bill of sale to facilitate this process).

Following this purchase, you’ll also need to pay a one-time fee to register your snow-ready vehicle. Once you complete the process and pay the requisite snowmobile registration fees, you’ll receive a permit and a registration number decal to display on your snowmobile.

  • Attach it on each side of your vehicle’s cowling or engine cover.
  • Place it so the registration number starts between 10 and 15 cm from the cowling’s rear.

If your vehicle’s design doesn’t allow you to place the decal on the cowling, consider placing it on each side of the tunnel, close to the light reflector.

You’ll also need insurance for your snowmobile before using it.
