Motorhomes

For many people, a motorhome is the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of types of RVs. It is quite literally a motorized home that can take you virtually anywhere you desire. Motorhomes are the only motorized type of RV and offer fantastic get-in-and-go functionality, making them great choices for families. Motorhomes also allow more freedom when using since passengers are not confined to one area. Even within the motorhome family of RVs, we can break it down further to Class A, B, and C:

  • Class A Motorhomes — The granddaddy of them all, Class A motorhomes will almost always be the most luxurious you can find. Class As are the largest of the motorhomes and often come equipped with full kitchens and bedrooms, tons of amenities, and the largest living space.
  • Class B Motorhomes — Also called campervans, Class B motorhomes are the smallest and most drivable of the three sizes. Class Bs are closer in size to a normal car than they are to a large RV, making them quaint, cozy, and more maneuverable than Class A and C motorhomes.
  • Class C Motorhomes —  Class Cs are the middle-sized motorhome, offering a combination of living space and drivability. These are often the most affordable motorhomes available, making them a great choice for those on a tighter budget.

Travel Trailers

As we move out of the motorized realm of RVs, travel trailers are likely the most commonly used. Travel trailers are towed using SUVs or trucks, offering plenty of flexibility once you reach your destination. There’s no one-size-fits-all guide for travel trailers, as they can extend up to the size of a Class A motorhome, or come in a small, pop-up style.

Like motorhomes, many travel trailers offer spacious living areas, sleeping quarters, kitchens, and bathrooms. They’re also typically much more affordable since you are not paying for any driving capabilities. Keep in mind that it is typically illegal to ride in a travel trailer when it is being towed by another vehicle.

Fifth Wheels

In simple terms, a fifth-wheel trailer is the same as a travel trailer with more space. Whereas the travel trailer can be towed by any vehicle, a fifth-wheel trailer must be towed by a truck with an open bed, creating an additional “shelf” of space within the trailer. This unique shape and design of fifth-wheel trailers creates more room on the interior.

Fifth-wheel trailers are usually the largest among the towable RVs available and come with many of the same benefits that travel trailers do — full kitchens, spacious living areas, bedrooms, and bathrooms. Another area where fifth wheels stand out is their maneuverability. Travel trailers are attached using a common ball hitch, limiting their maneuverability since they are attached to the end of the car. Fifth wheels, on the other hand, can be viewed as an extension of the towing vehicle rather than a separate unit altogether. They are secured to the bed of the truck, creating a stronger, more maneuverable ride.

Toy Haulers

Rounding out the four main types of RVs are toy haulers. Also referred to as sport-utility trailers, this style of RV is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts looking to bring their extra toys along for the trip. Toy haulers are split into two sections — living quarters and garage. The front of the toy hauler is similar to a travel trailer, offering a smaller combination of kitchen, living space, and sleeping areas.

The back half of the RV is essentially a garage that holds ATVs, dirt bikes, jet skis, and other outdoor toys. Toy haulers include a pull-down ramp out the back of the garage to make loading and unloading simple. If you’re okay with sacrificing some living space for an area that will hold other vehicles, toy haulers are likely the best RV for you.
